I don't know a lot about Mohawk. Is it a new company?

Mohawk is actually a very old company. It started in the 1800s in New York. Now, Mohawk is made up of many companies that are household names in the Dalton area. Aladdin Mills merged with Mohawk in 1994. The Aladdin facility on Antioch Road is the largest Mohawk manufacturing plant and home to one of the company's employment centers. Galaxy Carpet Mills also became a part of Mohawk that year. Diamond Carpet Mills in Eton was acquired in 1995. In 1999, World Carpet Mills, Durkan Patterned Carpet and Newmark and James became part of the Mohawk families. World's Green Street facility, with it's well known waterfall facing Morris Street, also houses one of Mohawk's employment centers. Several generations of area residents worked at World, Aladdin, Galaxy and Diamond. Some of those long-term employees are still with the company, and we're lucky to have their experience and their knowledge. The same spirit that made those companies great is still driving Mohawk today.

How do I know if you're hiring?

Because we're a growing company, we're usually hiring employees every week of the year. If you're looking for a job and you're ready to work, you definitely should apply. If you're looking for a specific job, call the Mohawk employment line at 277-1338 (or 800-241-4072 #52930). You're also welcome to drop by any of our employment centers at any time.

Do I need experience to get a job at Mohawk?

Mohawk has many entry-level jobs that require little or no experience. You can be trained on the job quickly. These jobs pay well and offer an opportunity for advancement to lead or supervisory positions. If you have experience, then you could be considered for many specialized jobs. These jobs pay very well, and, again, you would have an opportunity for advancement.

How do I get a first shift job?

First shift jobs are sometimes available. You should always ask at the time you complete an application. If you take a job on another shift, you would have an opportunity to "bid" for a first shift job when one becomes available in your department. Bids are reviewed based on qualified seniority. In other words, the length of time you've been with the company is most important, but you do need to be able to do the job or be able to be trained to do the job in a short amount of time.

First shift jobs are popular, but if you want to take college classes or have other needs, another shift may make your life easier to schedule. Our employment center teams will work to help you find a job that will fit your needs.

Do you test for drugs?

Yes. Employees must pass a pre-employment drug screen in order to work at Mohawk. We're a safety conscious company, and employee drug use in the workplace is very dangerous to the user and his or her co-workers. We also test after accidents, for suspicion and randomly for safety sensitive jobs.

Will you hire anyone under 18?

You must be 18 to work at Mohawk. Education is very important to us, and we want students to stay in school. If, however, you did drop out and want to pursue a GED, we will offer you tutoring and support you through the GED process. A high school diploma or GED will be required for supervisory positions.

Do you hire relatives of Mohawk employees?

Sure. That's not a problem. You would not be given preferential treatment as the relative of an employee, but you'd be welcome to apply for a job. All of our applicants are treated equally.

I saw that you're an Equal Employment Opportunity company. What does that mean?

It means that we don't discriminate against anyone based on race, gender, religion, disability, status as a disabled veteran or veteran of the Vietnam conflict. Basically, we're only interested in a person's ability to do the job safely and productively. We are proud of the people who work at Mohawk. They're not just good employees. They're good people.

What is Mohawk's pay rate?

Pay varies from job to job. One of the advantages of being a successful company is that we can offer our employees some of the best wages in the industry. You would have to search hard to find better pay for the same job. Plus, Mohawk jobs are stable jobs. There are usually opportunities for overtime, and those dollars add up fast!

How often do employees get paid?

Hourly employees receive a check every week. You are paid for the previous week's work. Checks are distributed in the department. The day you are paid depends on your department and shift.

When do I qualify for benefits?

Most benefits -- medical insurance, life insurance, dental/vision plan -- start 90 days after you begin working at Mohawk. You must be here one year to enroll in the 401(k) retirement plan, but that's even more incentive to stay. See our benefits section for a complete recap of what plans Mohawk offers.

How soon can I start?

Once employees go through orientation, we do our best to get them on the job as soon as they can begin. Often, employees are able to begin work later that week or the first working day of the next week. If you have a financial need or are just eager to get started, we're glad to help you begin your career at Mohawk as soon as you're ready.
